THE REAL TRUTH ABOUT BIMINI BAY RESORT

The Capo Group is now using the natural wonders of Bimini Bay (that it is destroying) to attract investors. The red text below are statements taken directly from the website of Bimini Bay Resort, www.biminibayresort.com/private_island/preservation.htm. The Shark Trust's Jeremy Stafford-Deitsch's comments refuting Bimini Bay Resort's claims are in black.

Evidence of destruction of Bimini mangroves and Bimini Bay by heavy machinery

Bimini Bay Resort: "Bimini Island shelters a world of natural beauty and one of the most important marine nursery habitats in the Bahamas. This makes for exciting fishing and diving, against a stunning background of natural wonders."

Jeremy Dietsch: This invaluable marine nursery habitat is precisely what is being destroyed for this development. With the nursery gone and the reefs smothered by dredged sediment and from pesticide and fertilizer run-off from the golf course, the fish will be gone, the reefs dead and there will be no 'stunning background of natural wonders'.

Bimini Bay Resort: "Lagoonal areas of Bimini are fringed with mangroves, salt tolerant trees that thrive in sheltered inter-tidal tropical areas. Mangroves are recognized as one of the most productive and valuable of the earth's habitat types."

"They provide a refuge and nursery ground for some 140 species that find food and shelter in these protected areas. Conch, bonefish, lobster and reef fish thrive in the tangled mangrove tree roots in North Sound lagoon."

Jeremy Dietsch: This is entirely true and lifted straight out of our criticisms of the development.

Bimini Bay Resort: "In order to preserve this natural wonder and to protect the food source that makes this a fishing paradise, Bimini Bay Resort is engaging in a habitat creation and restoration program that will maintain the surrounding mangrove wetlands healthy and teeming with life."

Jeremy Dietsch: Destroying the entire ecosystem and then claiming that you will restore it thus maintaining it must test even the gullibility of the Hilton Group plc management team. The intertidal habitat of the mangroves is being bulldozed and then smothered in sediment derived from the lagoon floor of the nursery grounds. Properties are being built in the only area that can sustain mangroves: the intertidal realm. Where exactly will the Capo Group create/restore new mangrove wetlands?

Bimini Bay Resort: "Together with marine biologists and governmental organizations, we at Bimini Bay are working hard to help preserve the natural wonders of Bimini for generations to come."

Jeremy Dietsch: Name the marine biologists who believe the Bimini Bay Resort and Casino will not destroy the priceless Bimini intertidal and inshore ecosystems. And as for the independence of the current Bahamian Government, will Mr Obie Wilchcombe, MP for Bimini and a fanatical supporter of this project (though totally against it while in opposition!!!) be distributing turkeys paid for by Mr Capo (not to mention co-signed Christmas cards) to the people of Bimini as he did at Christmas, 2003?
