MANGROVES FEED BIMINI BAY

MANGROVES provide nurseries to many fish in the sea; Fish can lay their eggs there. Larval fish can grow up there and small fish can hide there. Mangroves also protect the young of conch, lobster, shrimp, finfish and bonefish (sports fish). Without the mangroves, the Bahamas lose their fish!

Mangroves are irreplaceable:

  1. as buffers against storms (hurricanes & tsunamis).

  2. as nurseries for fish which feed people in coastal communities and throughout the world by providing the ocean's fishes with a safe place for them to grow up.

  3. as important habitat for many living things.

  4. to protect the health of sea grass beds and coral reefs.

Below is an illustration from Lynne Cherry's children's book The Sea, The Storm, and the Mangrove Tangle which explains why mangroves are so important for the wellbeing of fisheries, and humans as well as a mutlitude of other living things.

Hundreds of people affiliated with dozens of groups are trying to prevent the wholesale devastation of Bimini’s irreplaceable mangrove ecosystem by Bimini Bay Resort. Help stop Bimini Bay Resort!

A video clip showing the Bimini island mangroves and a small juvenile lemon shark (just one of the creatures that rely on the Bimini mangroves). You will also see what the mangroves look like when they have been bulldozed - the destroyed mangroves of Bimini in this clip are just the tip of the iceberg if the full scale Bimini bay resort project continues.
