CHILDREN ACT TO STOP BIMINI BAY RESORT

    -- by Lynne Cherry

Kids,

Please Help Save the Mangroves of Bimini in the Bahamas

  1. Read my book The Sea, the Storm and the Mangrove Tangle. This book explains the importance of mangrove ecosystems. If you write or email HILTON, please mention these points from the book:

    1. Mangroves are irreplaceable. Without them the fish population will plummet. They are important:
      1. as buffers against storms (hurricanes & tsunamis)
      2. as nurseries for fish which feed people in coastal communities and throughout the world by providing the ocean's fishes with a safe place for them to grow up.
      3. as important habitat for many living things
      4. to protect the health of sea grass beds and coral reefs.

  2. After reading The Sea, the Storm and the Mangrove Tangle, perform it as a play at your school or in your neighborhood to let others know the importance of mangroves.

  3. Ask people in your audience to write or email HILTON.

  4. Ask your friends to write or email HILTON. YOUR LETTERS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Please take a look at the website for the Bimini Bay Resort. On their site they state that they are developing their resort in an environmentally friendly way. This is a lie.

You can help by writing or emailing THE HILTON HOTEL CHAIN and telling them that Geraldo Capo the developer is destroying the mangroves of Bimini and the entire ecosystem. Here is a SAMPLE LETTER for inspiration.

The North Sound of Bimini was entirely mangroves and it seemed that it was going to be preserved as a Marine Protected Area (MPA) where the eggs of fish, conch, shrimp, lobsters and many other living things could grow up into adulthood without being disturbed.

But developer Geraldo Capo, was given a permit and is dredging the ocean bottom and building up the land. The sediment that he is disturbing is clouding the water and affecting the whole ecosystem. To the right, you can see photographs of the destruction.

If you write to the Prime Minister or Environmental Minister, please ask them why they gave Mr. Capo a permit when the whole area of mangroves was supposed to be protected as a Marine Protected Area.

Please tell them why the Bimini Bay Resorts development is a bad idea: Everybody knows how the mangroves in Indonesia saved some of the coastal communities from destruction. Everyone but Hilton seems to have heard how the mangroves in Florida buffered coastal communities from the recent hurricanes. Perhaps it will take children to teach the adults about the importance of preserving mangroves.

The Bimini Bay Resort:

  1. destroys mangroves that provide the "ecosystem services" mentioned above.
  2. destroys people's communities and homes and their ability to feed themselves from the ocean.
  3. destroys the larvae (very young stage) of conch, crabs, lobsters, shrimp, and finfish, including important food species and the bonefish, a highly prized gamefish for which Bimini is famous.

When you write to HILTON, please ask them to PROTECT THE REST OF THE MANGROVES AS A MARINE PROTECTED AREA (MPA) and emphasize that an intact mangrove ecosystem would attract ecotourists and preserve the fishery that is the reason people vacation on Bimini. You may also send an email to a Hilton.

Perhaps if enough people around the world write letters to the people below and send copies of the letters to the news media, we can save some of these mangroves in Bimini.

If you write letters, please send copies to:

    Lynne Cherry
    PO Box 4161
    Ithaca, NY 14852-4161

Thank you for helping to save what's left of Bimini Bay!

         Lynne Cherry

This developer wants to destroy all the mangroves and build a casino, hotel, golf course, marina and more condominiums.
